What triggers the rut in whitetail deer?
The bow season opened four weeks ago, but deer activity is only now intensifying. It is called the “rut” — the breeding season for whitetail deer. Photoperiod (amount of daylight each day) is what triggers females to come into estrus, and the does dictate rutting activity.
What factors affect deer rut?
5 Factors for Rut Hunting Success
- Weather. This is a huge factor when chasing deer during the rut.
- Temperature. Temperature has a sly way of dictating how much rut activity we see.
- Available Bedding Cover. Rut tactics are almost always terrain-based.
- Available Food Sources.
- Hunting Pressure.
What attracts bucks the most during the rut?
An estrous-based scent smells like a doe that’s ready to breed. Bucks cover lots of ground searching for that odor, so use it to your advantage. Dominant-buck scents smell like a mature buck, which can make other bucks aggressively seek a fight. Mock scrapes can also work during the rut by attracting curious bucks.
In what month does the whitetail rut occur?
The average peak day for the white-tail rut in the U.S. is November 13. Around this period of time, the bucks and does are very active, with the rut in full swing.
How long will a buck stay with a doe?
Here is why. The mature bucks usually will be locked-down and bedded-down with those first mature does that come into estrus. They may stay with her in thick cover for 3 to 5 days.
How many miles will a buck travel during rut?
Some travel far and some don’t travel very far at all. At our Ohio farm, we have plenty of does so the bucks don’t seem to travel as far. Most of them seem to have a home range of a mile or so. During the rut this expands to 2-3 miles it seems.
Do bucks move all day during rut?
Bucks will be cruising these areas at all hours of the day as they eagerly search for the first estrous does. Deer Behavior: While some mature bucks will stay on your property late in this pre-breeding period, others will start to expand their range.
How do you know when the rut is over?
A sure sign that the rut is about over is when does reunite with their fawns. Breeding typically breaks up doe/fawn units as the incessant buck pressure forces does and fawns apart. Fawns are wandering all over the woods looking for momma. They will be back together as soon as the doe is bred and the buck leaves her.
Will deer move in the rain during the rut?
Deer will be active all day during a steady rain, especially if the wet weather lasts for several days. Don’t let these conditions discourage you! The deer are out there and they must eat and socialize (especially during the rut). If you decide to move, do it around noon, when deer are least active.
Can you use too much Doe Estrus?
The doe are not in heat yet, so the bucks are not chasing and you shouldn’t be using an estrous scent at this point. You can use a normal doe urine, but estrous is from the point in time the doe go into heat. I would start using it around October 28th or so until the end of the regular archery season.
Will deer return if spooked?
Spooked deer will return to their bedding area, but when they return depends on how much the intrusion frightened them. If they can’t pinpoint the threat, they’ll likely return sooner than if they saw or smelled you. The goal is to intercept the deer when it returns hours later from downwind.
How do I attract big bucks to my property?
For variety and winter cover, you can mix in a few pines or cedars.
- Provide minerals. Maybe you’re fortunate enough to have a natural mineral site on your property.
- Add water.
- Create or enhance staging areas.
- Add shrubs and vines.
- Build big buck bedding cover.
- Create a thermal refuge.
- Plant oaks.
- Give them fruit.
Why do does run from bucks?
A few days before a doe comes into estrus and is ready for breeding, she begins to emit pheromones that alert any buck within smelling distance that it’s time. Bucks will come to that doe and work her, but instead of running away in fear or annoyance, instinct tells her to stick around.
How many does can a whitetail buck breed?
According to Shorty Flees, of Wilderness Whitetails in Wisconsin, a whitetail buck can breed about seven or eight does (in the wild) before becoming severely depleted.
Where do bucks bed during the rut?
During the seeking and chasing phase of the rut, bucks love to run back in the woods (usually about 15 to 30 yards) from the edge of a field (harvested corn is my favorite) as they use their eyes and nose to search for any doe offering even a hint of being near estrous. Often, bucks will cut the corner of the field.
